The challenge
A Riverside County flood control project called for a cast-in-place box culvert through a growing residential tract. The alignment ran right beside an open road and occupied homes, so the excavation had to go deep and stay narrow, with the public a few feet away on the other side of the K-rail.
Our approach
Slater dug and shored the trench with its own excavators, setting steel trench plates and pipe cross-struts as the cut advanced so crews could work safely at depth. Grade was held with a laser level in the trench, the subgrade was compacted, and the reinforced base slab was placed as the first of the culvert’s phased pours, with starter bars left for the walls.
The outcome
The photos we have follow the job through excavation, shoring and the poured base slab. They show what Slater does every day: deep, shored storm drain work beside live traffic, done by our own crews with our own equipment, as we have for 45 years.
